ShadingNovember 20262 minute read

Shades for the Las Vegas sun.

In Las Vegas, shades are as much about heat as privacy. Motorized shades that lower on the west glass before the afternoon sun arrives keep rooms cooler, protect floors and furniture from fading, and give you the view back at dusk, without anyone walking the house to pull cords.

Why do west-facing rooms need shades most?

Afternoon sun on west glass is the hardest light of the day in the valley. It heats the room, glares on screens, and fades floors and fabric over a few summers. Shades on a schedule that follows the sun take care of it before it starts.

Which shade fabric should you choose?

Fabric openness, the percentage of the weave you can see through, sets the balance. Around 1 to 5 percent cuts glare and heat while keeping the view; blackout fabric is for bedrooms and theaters. Many rooms take two shades on one window: a sheer for the day and a blackout for night.

Hardwired or battery shades?

Hardwired where you can, with power and control run to a pocket in the window head before drywall, so the shade disappears when it's up. Battery shades suit retrofits where walls are closed, and they still join the same control system.

How do shades work with the rest of the house?

Shades belong in the same scenes as the lighting: morning raises them, movie lowers them, leaving closes the west side. On commercial buildings they're scheduled by floor and facade so the whole building moves as one. See motorized shades for homes and commercial shading.

Questions

Do motorized shades help with heat?

Yes. Lowered before the sun reaches the glass, they cut the solar heat that gets into the room, which takes load off the cooling. How much depends on the glass, the orientation and the fabric.

Can motorized shades be added to an existing home?

Yes. Battery-powered shades need no new wiring; hardwired shades are best planned while the walls are open.

Do you install Lutron shades?

Yes. Lutron shading works on its own or under Crestron, Control4 or Savant, so the shades join whichever system runs the house.
