How is a home theater built?

A home theater is decided long before the screen goes up: at discovery, in the drawings and at rough-in, before the walls close. Get those right and the room works the day you move in. These are the stages of a CORVX theater in Las Vegas, and what each one decides.

Discovery: what is the room for?

A paid session that turns how you'll use the room into a brief: screen size, seating, sound, how dark it gets and how it starts. You leave with a documented plan, whoever builds it. More on discovery.

Design: where does everything go?

Screen and seating first, because the sight lines decide everything else. For a picture that fills your view without strain, the screen should take up roughly 30 to 40 degrees of your field of view from the main seats.

Then the speakers, including the overhead channels for immersive sound, the acoustic treatment, the equipment location, power and cooling. All of it is drawn against your architect's set and coordinated with your builder.

Acoustic treatment goes in as architecture, before the seats arrive.

Rough-in: why is it the stage that matters most?

Cable, power, backing and speaker boxes go in before drywall. It's the hardest stage to change later, so it's checked against the drawings before the walls close. In Las Vegas the equipment closet also needs real ventilation: a rack in a warm closet in July shortens the life of everything in it.

Build and test: why build the rack off site?

Racks are built and tested in our shop, not in your house. What arrives is already proven, so installation is a day of fitting, not a week of fault-finding.

What happens at calibration and handover?

Picture and sound are calibrated to the room, not left at factory settings. One press starts everything in the right order. You get the drawings, the settings and a walkthrough. Our private theater in The Ridges was built this way.

What support comes after handover?

Care plans keep the theater running for the years after, with remote monitoring where the system allows. See the home theater service.

Questions

When should a home theater be planned?

At design development, before framing, so the room's shape, power, ventilation and acoustics are built in rather than added.

Can an existing room become a home theater?

Often. Discovery shows what the room can do and what it would take.

Projector or TV for a home theater?

It depends on the room and the screen size. For the largest pictures, projection with an acoustically transparent screen lets the speakers sit behind the image. Discovery settles it for your room.
