A dining floor that runs on schedule.

A dining floor that steps from lunch to dinner to close without a manager walking it: lighting scenes composed to the hour, shades tracking the desert sun, music following the room's energy. The frames on this page are visualizations, built to the delivered design and labeled as exactly that. The schedule they depict runs every day.

The brief

A room that trades on atmosphere shouldn't run on switches.

The operator knew exactly what the room was worth at each hour, and knew the staff had better things to do at six than walk the floor adjusting dimmers. The brief was a floor that runs its own day: open, trade, dusk, close, written down and kept.

The desert made it urgent. A west glass line that sells the view at dusk punishes the room all afternoon, so the shades and the lighting had to work the problem together, on the sun's schedule rather than the clock's.

The dusk hour

The sun releases the facade, and the room takes over.

Dusk is the room's opening night, every night. As the sun lets go of the glass the shades rise for the view, the lighting slides from the working register into the evening scene, and the music comes up a notch to meet the energy. Nobody touches anything, because the handoff is programmed against the actual sunset.

It photographs the way it trades, which in hospitality is the same thing: every guest carries a camera, and the room is composed for it from the first cover to the last.

The close

One command sweeps the floor, and the systems confirm it.

Close is one command. Front of house steps down to cleaning levels, the music sleeps, back of house follows the last person out zone by zone, and the systems that should confirm they are off actually confirm it, to the operations team's dashboard rather than to hope.

The schedule was written with the operator, then tuned once the room had shown everyone its real day. It is documented, so it survives a change of manager.
